How to Connect a Receipt Printer to Your POS System
Connect an ESC/POS thermal receipt printer to your POS in under 10 minutes. This guide covers USB, network, and Bluetooth printer setup for Android tablets and desktop POS systems.

A thermal receipt printer is the most visible piece of POS hardware in your store. Set it up correctly once and it runs silently for years. Set it up wrong and you get paper jams, connection dropouts, and frustrated customers waiting for their receipt.
This guide covers every connection type — USB, network (TCP/IP), and Bluetooth — with step-by-step setup instructions for ZyntaPOS on Android tablets and desktop.
Why Thermal Receipt Printers?
Before the setup guide, it’s worth understanding why thermal printing is universal in retail:

ESC/POS: The Universal Protocol
Almost all thermal receipt printers use the ESC/POS protocol — a command language developed by Epson in the 1980s and now an industry standard. Any ESC/POS printer works with any ESC/POS-compatible software.

Connection Method 1: USB (Recommended for Fixed Counters)
USB is the simplest, most reliable connection for a fixed checkout counter. No pairing, no IP addresses, no Wi-Fi dropouts.
What you need:
- ESC/POS printer with USB interface
- USB cable (usually included with printer)
- Android tablet with USB host mode support OR a Windows/Mac/Linux desktop
- For Android: USB-C to USB-A adapter or powered USB hub
Setup on Android (ZyntaPOS):
- Connect the USB cable from the printer to your USB-C hub or adapter, then into the tablet
- Power on the printer — it will self-test print automatically
- Open ZyntaPOS → Settings → Printer Setup
- Tap Add Printer → select USB
- ZyntaPOS scans for connected USB printers and lists detected devices
- Select your printer from the list
- Tap Test Print — a test receipt should print
If the printer doesn’t appear:
- Verify the USB hub supports USB Host mode (not all USB-C hubs do)
- Try a different cable
- Try the printer directly connected without a hub
Setup on Windows (ZyntaPOS Desktop):
- Connect USB cable to the PC
- Windows installs the USB device automatically (no separate driver needed for most ESC/POS printers)

Connection Method 2: Network (TCP/IP) (Recommended for Multiple Terminals)
A network-connected printer connects to your local Wi-Fi or wired network and receives print jobs from any device on the same network. Ideal when you have multiple POS terminals sharing one printer.
What you need:
- ESC/POS printer with Ethernet or Wi-Fi interface
- Network connection (Ethernet cable to router, or Wi-Fi setup)
- The printer’s IP address
Finding your printer’s IP address:
Most network printers print a self-test page that includes the IP address. Hold the Feed button and power on simultaneously, or press the self-test button (varies by model — check your manual).
Alternatively, log into your router’s admin panel and look for connected devices.
Setting a static IP (recommended):
By default, network printers get a DHCP IP address that can change when the router restarts. Set a static IP so ZyntaPOS always finds the printer at the same address.
Option A: Set static IP on the printer itself Most Epson and Star printers have a utility app (EpsonNet Config, Star Configuration Utility) that lets you assign a fixed IP address.
Option B: Reserve IP in router In your router admin panel: DHCP → Static IP Lease → bind the printer’s MAC address to a fixed IP (e.g., 192.168.1.100).
Connecting in ZyntaPOS:
- Open ZyntaPOS → Settings → Printer Setup
- Tap Add Printer → select Network (TCP/IP)
- Enter the printer’s IP address (e.g.,

Connection Method 3: Bluetooth
Bluetooth printers offer wireless flexibility. Common use cases: tableside printing in restaurants, mobile retail, pop-up shops.
What you need:
- ESC/POS Bluetooth printer
- Android tablet or desktop with Bluetooth
Setup on Android:
- Power on the Bluetooth printer and put it in pairing mode (usually hold the pairing button until LED flashes)
- On Android: Settings → Bluetooth → Scan
- Select the printer from the device list → Pair
- Open ZyntaPOS → Settings → Printer Setup
- Tap Add Printer → select Bluetooth
- Select your paired printer from the list
- Tap Test Print
Bluetooth reliability tips:
- Keep the printer within 5–8 metres of the tablet
- Avoid 2.4GHz interference (busy Wi-Fi environments)
- Charge the printer battery before service — print jobs fail silently on low battery
- If print jobs stop working, re-pair the device: delete the Bluetooth pairing and repeat the setup
Receipt Paper: What to Buy
Paper width
Most retail receipt printers use 80mm paper (the standard). Some compact models use 58mm. Check your printer’s specification before buying paper.
Paper roll diameter
Standard receipt rolls are 80mm diameter. Larger rolls (100mm diameter) fit in some printers and last longer between changes.
Paper quality
Cheap thermal paper produces receipts that fade quickly — sometimes within a few months. For customer-facing receipts (proof of purchase, warranty evidence), use quality thermal paper from a trusted supplier. Look for “top-coated” or “archival” thermal paper.
Paper quantity estimate
A busy retail counter printing 100 receipts/day uses approximately 1 roll per 2–3 days. Buy in bulk (100-roll cases) for better unit pricing.
Kitchen Printer Setup (Restaurants)
Restaurants often use a second printer in the kitchen for order tickets. Setup is identical to the main receipt printer, but with a different IP address (network printer) or separate USB connection.
In ZyntaPOS, configure two printers:
- Receipt Printer: counter-facing, prints customer receipts
- Kitchen Printer: kitchen-facing, prints order tickets when items are submitted
In the product/category settings, assign food items to route to the Kitchen Printer. Drinks may route to the bar printer. Desserts to the dessert station. This routing is configured per product category.
Troubleshooting Common Receipt Printer Issues
Receipt prints blank
- Paper is loaded upside down. Thermal paper only prints on one side (the coated side). Remove the roll, flip it, reload.
Receipt prints partial text then cuts
- Paper jam. Open the cover, remove any jammed paper, reload.
USB printer not detected
- Try a different USB cable
- Use a powered USB hub (bus-powered hubs sometimes can’t supply enough current for printers)
- Verify USB Host mode is enabled on your Android tablet
Network printer unreachable
- Verify printer and tablet are on the same Wi-Fi network
- Check the IP address hasn’t changed (set static IP)
- Try pinging the printer from another device
Print quality is faded
- Thermal paper is low quality or heat setting is too low
- Increase the print darkness setting in ZyntaPOS printer settings
- Replace with better quality thermal paper
